Through thick and thin, archaeology research, landscaping discussions, hurricanes, Beaufort County bid process, choosing Savannah Construction, closing the park, moving the historic latrine, laying out the concrete, the project finally began with little fanfare. Then, along came COVID-19 to slow it down again. The picnic pavillion was the first step completed. Utilities were installed. The History Center was finally completed in 2021 and named for our founder, Pete Richards.

The diorama was moved to the History Center from the Saint Helena Branch Library following the issuance of our certificate of occupancy in November. Our opening celebration lived up to it's long and eventful plan. The park is a beautiful addition to Beaufort County and the history of Port Royal. Come visit!

History Center Renamed!

We are proud to announce that the Beaufort County Council voted to approve naming of the new building at the Fort Fremont Preserve, “The Fort Fremont History Center in Memory of Pete Richards.”
Pete was the founder of the Friends of Fort Fremont. His energy, enthusiasm, and determination transformed an unknown historical ruin into a recognized landmark of interest to many. The new center exists because of Pete's vision and passionate persuasion of the matter before the County over many years. Sadly, Pete passed away on February 29, 2020. Naming the History Center in memory of Pete is an appropriate recognition for a man who gave so much to so many.
